Be Your Child’s Best Teacher

There are a number of factors that determine a child’s capacity for knowledge. Parents can always help get a jump start for their child’s learning. You are after all, your child’s first and best teacher.
Get an Early Start
Being preoccupied with the worries of life is the typical adult state of mind. This constant chatter in our head blocks our thought process and makes us forget things. A child’s mind is wide open. Paying the bills, maintaining the house, and work performance is not one of their concerns. They need to start their education now.

The ABC’s and a lyrical song sound the same to a baby. You should count to ten and beyond and sing the ABC’s every time you play with the baby. Paint letters around your child’s room and use flash cards with them. Then point to an “A” and say this is an “A”. You will eventually move on to whole words, but start with letters and numbers. If your friends and family tease, don’t get discouraged. There is nothing for you and your baby to lose.
Consider Other Topics
Reading writing and arithmetic are important, but your child’s curriculum in school will be filled with these subjects. Right now is the best time to make sure they have a broader view for education. As they get older, even though it will be years before the kid will have a credit card or a driver’s license, teach them about handling money and the rules of the road.
For example, whenever you purchase something with a credit card, explain to the child that these little pieces of plastic are a big responsibility and they should never buy what they can’t afford. Teach them to pay their bills on time and in full. Although these lessons may seem to go in one ear and out the other, they won’t. These are important words. Once they start using money, they will have a better understanding of how to manage it.
It’s important they know about driving safety as well. Begin young so that by the time they are sixteen and behind the wheel, you will know that your kid is prepared to handle the car with maturity and intelligence. Merging is something to consider, when someone needs to be let in you should wave them in after you slow down. When this happens let the child know that that driver is considered courteous. They should know that being courteous is not a weakness, instead it allows you to have better control of your vehicle.
You will think of other lesson examples as they arise in your life. Everything from handling a baseball bat to baking grandma’s secret cake recipe will emerge. There will also be serious discussions about drugs, alcohol, and yes, sex. This is best brought up in a conversation, rather than making it feel like a lesson. Your kids will listen to you if you spend time talking to them.
