Which Baby Feeding Bottles Should I Buy?
22nd August 2009 by Babies No CommentsNow that the big question, “Should I breastfeed or bottle feed my baby?” is out of the way, the next decision is which baby feeding bottles to buy?
As with anything nowadays there is a large choice of different baby feeding bottles available in all different shapes and sizes and varying from cheap to very expensive. To start with you’ll need at least half a dozen bottles together with sterilizing solution and cleaning equipment. Are the expensive bottles worth the cost? Or should you just buy a standard baby bottle without all the bells and whistles?
The two basic types of bottles are plastic or glass baby feeding bottles. Glass bottles are durable, unless you drop them, and probably more hygienic. They are easy to wash and do not have a lingering smell after they have been used. They are also completely free of any chemicals. The disadvantages of glass is that they are a lot heavier and cost a lot more.
Plastic baby bottles are usually inexpensive so can be replaced when they become damaged or discolored. There has been some concern over the chemical content of plastic bottles. A chemical called BPA (Bisphenol A ) which is used during manufacture may be released when the bottles are heated. However these claims are not proven and are still ongoing.
The FDA has stated that plastic bottles are perfectly safe so, depending on how much you can trust the FDA, this may be the option for you.
There are also baby feeding bottles that help to prevent colic by restriciting the amount of air that your baby can swallow. Others have disposable linings which means you don’t have to sterilize them. Of course the cost of these specialized types of bottles is considerably higher, but if you have a baby with colic of no time to sterilize bottles then these may be an option for you.
In the end the choice you make is what works best for you and your baby. Bottle feeding your baby is great alternative to breast feeding if the latter is not possible for some reason and can be a rewarding experience. Your choice of baby feeding bottles will add to this positive feeding experience.
