The World’s Smallest Hands And Feet
2nd February 2012 by Babies No CommentsI knew the decision to have children would change my life. The first time it really started to impact me was, agree with it or not, picking out furniture for our first baby’s nursery. The whole house was decked out with pretty furniture, clean modern lines and edgy designs, where did our child’s play house fit into that? I was determined to give my baby an ordinary youth, but could I do it without giving up the look of my home?
As expected I knew that metal sculptures likely would not be the best nursery accessory, particularly by the time this tiny one was up and running. So I turned to some more conventional ways of decoration. I found a brilliant carpenter who was a year just off from retirement and made his remaining days a great challenge! From a toy box with complex woodcarving to lovable carvings lining the cot, I fit beautiful detail in where ever I could.
During my first trip to the local baby store, I was let down. I had been expecting a huge range, more than I could see in a day. I quickly remembered I was in a little city and we were lucky to have only 2 baby stores. So I started searching the web and before long I found exactly what I was after. From inspiring second hand pieces that just required a coat of French polish to be functional to fashionable toys in bronzes, it was all out there on the web.
Eight months in I had bought just about everything, from cloth nappies (and on 2nd thought disposable nappies) to all the standard baby accessories. The baby shower endowed me with a massive array of carefully and lovingly chosen gifts, from boutique crayons and gift vouchers for bassinets to disposable nappies. But the best gift of all was a baby sculpture kit from my sister in law, a kit I could not wait to use.
After a problem free birth, I brought my dear child home for the 1st time. Just before her first bath at home, my hubby and I made some of the finest baby sculptures I have ever seen. Her small hands and feet all fit on the same bit of clay! Then we had to break out a canvas and our recently acquired body paints for another initiation rite, bum prints!
