In today’s society everyone likes to throw away their stuff, but there is something special about our baby items that makes us want to keep them. During pregnancy, many people will offer their old nursery furniture and crib bedding. Babies can be a big financial drain to a family, thankfully offerings of cribs and bedding can help keep those costs in check, and always remember to thank the giver. When picking bedding and crib for your baby, do a little research to make sure the products are safe and trustworthy.

Whatever you decide, a Moses basket or crib, the first bed belonging to your baby will no doubt be something special and a keepsake. While you are refinishing your used baby crib, take the time to make sure it will be safe for your baby. Even new baby bedding and cribs should be checked for safety. An old wicker cradle can be beautiful to look at but check for safety as there may be loose or broken bits of wood, and some joints can become loose or weakened from age; we also would recommend that you replace the mattress with a new one. While baby believes everything should go directly into the mouth, protect your infant by checking the skirt when fitting for loose threads or other choking hazards.

When you are putting up new drapes, check to see that there are no loose threads or dangling material that a baby might be able to get a hold of and put in his/her mouth. It is suggested by the Juvenile Products Manufacturer’s Association (JPMA) in America, and also by and British Standards (BS) in the United Kingdom, that you should not use old blankets and baby furniture if you can possibly replace them. Purchase new bed goods for your child’s safety. Go in for JPMA or BS ‘KITE’ marked products. They are quite safe.

Hand-me-downs may be ecologically friendly, as well as generous, preventing the loss of perfectly good furniture and baby bedding. Your baby will spend many hours in his crib, so it is important to carefully examine and test it for safety. These are some important things to consider when you do your baby safety equipment check. Be sure that snags that could catch on a baby’s clothes, as well as all chipped, loose, or toxic lead paints, are removed. Always make sure the bars of the crib are closer than 2 and 3/8 inches apart and the head and foot board of the crib should be solid with no holes, to prevent baby’s head from getting caught between them. To prevent the crib from wobbling, I would check all connections, screws and make sure that all the pieces are in place.  Then go around the crib and double check again. It should only take one hand to raise and lower the side rail. Once raised, it should be fully secured. The mattress should be solid and clean and the side rails of the crib should be no less than 22 inches higher than the crib mattress.

A new mattress that would fit in the crib is always better. Nursery bedding may be dangerous if not secured correctly, so be certain to tie the strings of the bumper tightly so that the baby cannot pull the bumper down. Alternatively, just take down the bumper completely. For babies under a year old, overheating can be caused by using duvets, quilts, sheepskin, and pillows. Sheets and blankets may be combined and used. Also keep a thermometer in the room ready for use. Babies are very quick little creatures, take climbing for example, before you know it they will have mastered the talent, that is why one should keep cords, lamps, window blinds/curtains and other pieces of furniture out of reach of the crib.

While you are enjoying your baby, and experiencing the wonderment and fun it’s easy to forget how quickly your new baby will learn and adapt and literally grow up right in front of your eyes.
